A federal judge in Boston Wednesday is allowing the Trump administration to move forward with its federal worker buyout program for the moment.

A federal judge in San Francisco on Thursday found that the mass firings of probationary employees were likely unlawful, granting temporary relief to a coalition of labor unions and organizations that has sued to stop the Trump administration’s massive dismantling of the federal workforce.

A judge on Thursday granted a restraining order against the Office of Personnel Management, saying it illegally ordered thousands of job terminations of certain federal employees and must retract its directives and dealing a blow to President Donald Trump’s efforts to slim down the government quickly and dramatically.

A federal judge ruled Thursday the Trump administration’s mass firing of probationary government workers was probably illegal, according to multiple outlets, ordering the Office of Personnel Management to rescind directives that triggered the layoffs after the Trump administration recently indicated the largest round of layoffs to several federal agencies yet is forthcoming.

The ruling directs the Office of Personnel Management to withdraw directives sent to a number of federal agencies that resulted in thousands of staff being laid off.
